Antie Delia's 50th Birthday Bash

Yesterday we went to North Jersey where my cousin Auntie Delia lives. My visit in NJ was in time for her bday celebration.

The party was a great success. There were lots of Filipino visitors which she had befriended for over 25 years of living here in the USA. Friends come and go at the party. The food was overflowing. It was very festive.

They had roast pork. The birthday cake was ordered at the Filipino bakery and baked by a Filipino baker. It was awesome! There were plenty of food which I haven't had in a long time. The notable dishes that were there which of course are traditional Filipino dish were: diningding, humbang langka, and bamboo shoots (the first time ever that I have tasted that dish and was really really good). They also served a goat dish ( i just forgot the name.. ). There were also empanada, suman, biko, bibingka, and some other filipino delicacies that is not common in Bohol.

Gosh, I couldn't believe how much food was served during the party. There were grilled panga ng tuna, grilled pork belly, there were pork bbq in the stick, broiled salmon, buttered shrimp and of course a birthday party is not possible without pansit! Yes, there was pansit palabok too!

I don't think I could ever list all the food that was served. The good thing with all those mentioned food, visitors brought most of them. So basically, Ante Delia and Uncle Jimmy didn't cook it all.

The party was a great success! We had so much fun... It would have been wonderful if Dave was with us... he would definitely have a great time....

Shopping at the Oriental Store

Menmen and Roger picked us up at Philadelphia Airport last night. After they picked us up, we went directly to the Oriental Store, which was on the way home. The oriental store that we went to was amazing. It was big and there are so many fresh fish in there. How I wish that there will be an oriental store that big in Alabama. I am sure, I will eat fish everyday.

The fish variety that was sold in the store were: Tuna, king fish (tangigue), snapper, beltfish (diwit-diwit), tilapia, catfish, salmon, and a lot more which I can't name. They also sell pork bellies which is really yummy for grilling. There were different cuts of the pork that is so hard to find in Alabama. Needless to say, we bought a lot. Asian vegetables are also abundant in the store. And guys, would you believe that there is even fresh ripe jackfruit there? (hahaha I don't like jackfruit).

I also found different kinds of dried fish there... Gosh, if this store is near me I will be in heaven all the time!

Getting Ready

I am excited to see my sister again. I know I will miss Dave but still I am excited to travel and spend a week with Menmen and Roger.

I am now getting ready, Mom Lori and Dan will pick us up and bring us to the airport in less than an hour. My flight will be at 4:10PM and we will be in Philadelphia at 7:19 (expected arrival time). I hope Andrea will be a good girl during the flight especially that it is just her and me.

Home Protection

I moved here in the USA almost 3 years ago. Moving permanently to a different country is a big change. I left the family security that I had in the Philippines and started a new life here in the USA far from the comfort provided by my biological family. There was a lot of adjustments before I finally felt settled in.

My husband always worry whenever he goes to work because I was left alone in our place. The first few days he kept on reminding me to make sure that the doors were locked and to call 911 if something happens.

Cantaloupe

Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are considered the deadliest “animal” in the world. The Anopheles mosquito, in particular, is dangerous because it transmits malaria, which kills more than one million people every year, primarily in Africa. Besides malaria, there are other diseases that are spread by mosquitoes.

Personally, I don't like mosquitoes. Their bites cause skin bumps. The bumps are irritating because it is itchy. Most people have an allergic reaction to mosquito bites, that is why the area around the mosquito bite swells and itches.

There are different ways to minimize the presence of mosquitoes.

1. Use mosquito repellent. These products are proven to be effective to make the mosquitoes go away. The chemicals present in repellent blocks the receptors on mosquito antennae thus preventing them from sensing and smelling you.
   
2. Mosquitoes are drawn to heat, so refrain from wearing dark clothes as it retains heat more heat than any other lighter clothing.
   
3. Use insecticides. Using insecticides will keep the mosquitoes away but only for a shorter period of time. Using insecticides is not cost effective.
4. Use mosquito traps. Using Mega-Catch can kill thousands of mosquitoes in a single night.

There are different variety of roses at Jan's garden. Because of so much rain, the blooms are not as pretty as the last time that I saw it. But still, the scent of the roses still lingers at their yard.

Ironing - My Biggest Calvary

Ironing is my biggest calvary. I hate ironing since I can remember. I especially hate the traditional way of ironing where you have to use burning charcoal and ironed the clothes in a file of sheets. Ironing board was not a "has to have" item in our household. Ironing is a laborious job. Even after we bought an electric iron, I still don't do too well. I am only forced to iron when wrinkly shirts need it very badly. I remember that I only ironed clothes that we need to wear for church and that alone was a big job for me.

I am glad that I discovered about wrinkle free clothes. It works wonder for me. I just hang them after I get them from the dryer. I know that is a lazy thing to do but thankfully, my husband does not complain about it.

Killen Weekend Getaway

We had a great time during our visit with Dad and Jan. Andrea was showing off the night that we were there. She had a great time playing with her new toys and entertaining the four of us.



We went to the mall and let Andrea ride some of the kiddie rides. I could not believe the price of the ride. It used to be just $.25 now it is already $.75.... Prices are all going up for sure and that does not spare kiddie rides in the mall.


Dad and Jan enjoyed their time with Andrea. They were playing with the plastic fruits. Yes of all the toys that Andrea has, she most likely to play with those that you wouldn't expect her to like.




It was too bad the weather was nasty when we were there. We have to leave earlier than planned because we don't want to be caught up in a bad weather on the road. Maybe the next time we will visit them, we will have more time to explore their orchard and gardens.

Thanks for the great time Dad and Jan. We hope to see you soon... and hmmm I can't wait for all the fruits to be ripe... I want to eat some (fresh from the tree!).

Flying to Philadelphia this Thursday

As I have mentioned a month ago, we are going to visit my sister Menmen in New Jersey. Well, finally, the wait is over. We are scheduled to fly to Philadelphia this Thursday. The closest airport to my sister is the Philadelphia Airport. I think it is just about 15 minutes from where they live. My sister will pick us up at Philadelphia Airport. We will be visiting my sister without Dave. Too bad, he doesn't have vacation days anymore that is why he can't come with us. This is the first time that we will be away from one another since we got married. I know we will have a good time with my sister but I am sure I will surely miss my babe.

Anyway, since I am traveling with Andrea alone, I don't need to bring a lot of things. Menmen said, she already have a stroller, car seat and some clothes for Andrea. I will just need to bring one Carry-On Luggage for some of Andrea's necessity. It will be hard to travel with a baby alone so I am using a wheeled carry on luggage. This will be easier to tot around while I am in the airport waiting for our flight.

By the way, while I am in New Jersey, Menmen and I will be shopping for Briefcases. Her husband needs a new one so we will try to look for a good deal.

Monday Movie Meme: How You Watch Movies

It is Monday Movie Meme again. For this week, we are sharing how we watch movies.

Below is how we usually watch movies:

Red Box: This is a cheap way of renting movie. A movie for a night is just $1.09. You just need to return the movie before 9:00PM the following day. There are less copies of newly released movie in a Red Box. Sometimes, there is a waiting line. But if we get a chance that there is less people and the movie we want to see is in the Red Box, we prefer this because it is cheaper.

Blockbuster: We mostly rent newly releases here because they have more copies. I used to be a member of Monthly Movie Pass but then, they increased their fees so I decided to cancel my monthly membership. We rent movies specially during weekends.

Collection: We have more or less 300 DVDs in our collection. We watched our favorite movies more than once specially the ones in our collection.

Theater: We used to watch movies in theater but now that we have Andrea, we don't anymore. It has been over a year since we have seen a movie in the theater

Snacks: At home, we don't eat anything while watching movie.

Blogging from Killen, Alabama

This is our second day in Killen. I have had fun. I enjoyed walking around Dad and Jan's yard. The fruit trees are fruiting and the flowers are blooming. It has been raining since yesterday but it doesn't stop me from roaming around outside. I love the feel of the rain. It is not heavy so I can just go out and look at everything. Andrea and I had fresh strawberries from the vine. Too bad, we were too late.... the cherries are all gone. The bird got all of it. Perhaps the bird does not know we are coming that is why the bird didn't left any.

We all have a great time. Andrea is in her best of moods. Last night, we watch Slumdog Millionnaire with Dad and Jan. We have seen it already but since they haven't we decided to rent it for them. Good thing there is Red Box at their local walmart so we saved for the m
ovie rental.

Beef Heart

Beef heart is inexpensive and lean but it is seldom that you find this in the grocery store. Last week, when we went grocery shopping, I found packages of beef heart. I bought one to try. I remember that in the Philippines, when we slaughter our own pork or beef, all the parts are of value. Nothing is wasted. I know I have eaten beef heart before I just don't know what recipe was it.

I decided to make a sweet, sour and spicy beef heart. This recipe is somewhat and experiment. Luckily, it turn out so good.
